New local jeweller aims to shine

We welcomed a new jewellery shop into Letchworth Garden City on Saturday (3 December) with our Chairman, Colin Chatfield officially opening the store. Orga, which sells, buys and repairs jewellery, is run by John Nash who brings over 19 years of experience working in the jewellery sector.

The store has moved into 11 The Arcade, our covered shopping precinct which we refurbished back in 2009. Colin said: “It is great to see an exciting independent business join the town’s diverse mix of retailers. In tough economic times this is fantastic news for Letchworth Garden City.”

Willmott Dixon will expand its occupancy in The Spirella Building

Major local employer the Willmott Dixon Group is to expand its operation in Letchworth Garden City by bringing more than 70 new jobs to the town , it was announced today (Tuesday).  

The Group, the UK’s third largest privately-owned capital works, regeneration and support services company will increase its existing occupancy of The Spirella Building, owned and managed by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, to some 35% of the building.

Last November, The Arcade celebrated the completion of its most recent transformation. This year, it’s the turn of the Tourist Information Centre to lead the celebrations.

On Saturday 4 December, the Centre will mark its 10th anniversary with mince pies, the odd glass of non-alcoholic bubbly, street entertainers, free face painting, a special appearance of characters from 'The Night B4 Christmas' pantomime, plus the Letchworth Town Cryer will be on-hand. With something for the whole family and a great range of shops, make sure you join in the fun in The Arcade, 10am to 1pm.

Elected Governor Elections - A Gentle Reminder

Letchworth Garden City residents who appear on NHDC’s edited electoral register or those that have registered direct with the Heritage Foundation will now have received ballot papers to vote in the ballot to elect six of the Foundation’s 30 Governors.

This is a gentle reminder that all completed ballot papers must reach the Electoral Reform Services by noon on Thursday 30 September 2010.

Environmental family fun in Letchworth GC Town Centre

Letchworth Garden City will be celebrating all things environmental this Saturday (17 July), with over 12 conservation aware organisations ‘on show’ in the new Leys Square between 10am and 3pm.  

The town’s very first ‘Earth Day’ will feature stallholders such as the Shark Trust, HydroActive, North Hertfordshire Beekeepers, Transition Town Letchworth, The Fish Film Company and many more, as well as the regular Farmers’ Market.

At a time when The Comet is running its admirable ‘Buy Local’ campaign, which the Foundation supports, I am disappointed that Louise McEvoy chooses to speculate that Letchworth residents who wish to retain the four trees in Leys Square might boycott local shops.
