David Smith of the British Bobsleigh Team recieved £1,000 towards training

Over £6,700 was awarded to local causes through our grant funding this month. Here’s our round-up of the people we are supporting…

David Smith, a member of the British Bobsleigh Team and Letchworth resident, has been boosted by £1,000 towards his £5,000 2011/ 12 training programme. David hopes to compete for Team GB at the 2011 World Championships and the 2014 Winter Olympics.

19 Letchworth-based groups shared £3,188 towards Christmas lunches to be enjoyed by 802 people this December.

Join us this Saturday (26 November) as the Town Centre Partnership turn on the Christmas lights for Leys Avenue, Eastcheap and Station Road with plenty of festive activities.

The fun kicks off at 12.15pm with Santa’s arrival, followed by live entertainment until 5pm, when the lights, funded and set up by the Heritage Foundation, are switched on.

Our Town Centre Consultation Team will be in Leys Avenue throughout the day, on-hand to answer any questions you have on the options for The Wynd and ideas on the wider town centre. Pop down and share your views with us.

World War Two brought to life by Letchworth Museums

Over 200 children from five local primary schools took part in the annual ‘Open Doors’ learning week.  Hosted in partnership by First Garden City Heritage Museum and Letchworth Museum, this special schools week gave pupils a taster of Letchworth life on the World War Two Home Front.

Crafty move by 1,000 people!

Gifts-a-plenty at Standalone Farm Craft Fair

Over 1,000 visitors ‘flocked’ to Standalone Farm, a traditional working farm in Letchworth Garden City, for its recent annual Craft Fair. Families enjoyed fairground rides, Santa’s Grotto, and an array of delightful craft stalls including toys, jewellery, embroidery, cakes, sweets and more, picking up gifts for Christmas. There was also an opportunity to visit the farm’s animals before the winter closure.

Last November, The Arcade celebrated the completion of its most recent transformation. This year, it’s the turn of the Tourist Information Centre to lead the celebrations.

On Saturday 4 December, the Centre will mark its 10th anniversary with mince pies, the odd glass of non-alcoholic bubbly, street entertainers, free face painting, a special appearance of characters from 'The Night B4 Christmas' pantomime, plus the Letchworth Town Cryer will be on-hand. With something for the whole family and a great range of shops, make sure you join in the fun in The Arcade, 10am to 1pm.

New toy store opens

Colin Chatfield officially opening Cuthberts Toy Store

A proverbial ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ awaits children of all ages as a new toy store opens in the Garden City.

Cuthberts Toys in Eastcheap – in the former Ethel Austin premises – was officially opened last Thursday by Colin Chatfield, Chairman of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.

Before ‘cutting the ribbon', Mr Chatfield welcomed the “excellent” new store to the town and hoped that “its tenure would be long and happy.”

Amazon swells the ranks at Business Centre West

A new tenant has joined the ranks at the Business Centre West, Letchworth Garden City. Amazon Office Supplies, a locally based online office supply company looking to expand, has taken a three year lease on a 923 sq ft storage unit. The letting has been completed by Tomlinson Quin (part of the Aitchison Raffety Group) acting on behalf of The Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. The rental agreed was on a rising basis close to the quoting rental of £5,000 per annum.

The Wynd welcomes new retailers

As preparations continue for the major redevelopment of The Wynd in 2011, the opportunity has arisen to welcome a number of new retailers to the area.

The Arcade officially reopened!

The £500,000 makeover of this special landmark in the world’s first Garden City’s has been declared open.

A large number of people gathered to mark the occasion in this popular indoor shopping precinct, on Friday, November 20.

Stuart Kenny, Director General of the Heritage Foundation, along with Hugh Harper, until recently the Chairman of Letchworth Garden City Town Centre Partnership, unveiled a commemorative plaque on the entrance from Leys Avenue.

The Arcade

A special landmark in the world’s first Garden City has just received a £500,000 makeover!

In 1996, the Heritage Foundation bought the popular indoor shopping precinct The Arcade in the heart of the town centre and undertook a major refurbishment the following year, which included a new roof, repainting, a new entrance out to The Wynd and improved signage.

Now, some 13 years on and with The Arcade having a direct link to the proposed new Wynd re-development, the facelift was completed this week.

Tree Planting on GreenwayOn Thursday 20 November 2003, pupils from 17 Letchworth Garden City schools gathered for tree planting on the Greenway near Radwell Meadows. Armed with spades and forks, the children planted 100 trees along a section of the Greenway route to commemorate 100 years of the world's first Garden City. After planting, they decorated the trees with brightly-coloured ribbons and labels.

Lord Mayor's Show 2003Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation joined in the pageantry, fun and spectacle of the Lord Mayor's Show on Saturday 8 November. This year's show pulled in a crowd of more than 500,000 people and was the biggest ever in its 800-year history.
