This Thursday, (6 October) former BBC News presenter Angela Rippon will be working at Letchworth Garden City’s Broadway Cinema as part of a new primetime BBC 1 series.

Local amateur photographers celebrated the conclusion of Letchworth’s community photographic competition on Friday, September 9, at a winner’s presentation evening at Heritage Foundation funded and run Letchworth Garden City Tourist Information Centre.


During the summer months residents, locals and visitors to the town were tasked with ‘snapping’ their favourite Letchworth Garden City building or public space.

Cinema’s birthday celebrations continue

Over 300 people got the chance to go behind-the-scenes of a traditional working picture house last weekend (Friday 9 to Sunday 11 September) as Broadway Cinema put on special tours as part of their 75th birthday celebrations.

A video film by John Stoddard about life in Letchworth Garden City during 1990 was re-launched on Monday, September 27, at Letchworth Garden City Tourist Information Centre.

Featuring nearly two hours of not-to-be-missed Garden City nostalgic moments, the DVD called: ‘A Year in the Life of Letchworth Garden City: 1990’; includes clips of events and occasions, such as the town’s Carnival Procession; Summer Fun Day; Garden City Street Race; Ideas Fair; along with exclusive interviews from the people behind the scenes who helped make them happen.

Charity screening ‘reaches for the skies’

Last Wednesday (15 September), Broadway Cinema hosted a charity screening of the classic wartime movie, the ‘Battle of Britain’ to mark the event’s 70th anniversary and raise donations for the Royal Air Force Association’s Wings Appeal.

Heritage Museum and RAFA commemorate wartime event

This Saturday, (18 September) the Royal Air Force Association (Letchworth, Hitchin & District Branch) and First Garden City Heritage Museum will mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with the start of a series of exciting events.

RAFA members will be raising money for the Association’s ‘Wings Appeal’ with competitions, giveaways and the presence of RAF Police Officer from Royal Air Force Henlow in Garden Square Shopping Centre from 8am – 5pm.

Elected Governor Elections - A Gentle Reminder

Letchworth Garden City residents who appear on NHDC’s edited electoral register or those that have registered direct with the Heritage Foundation will now have received ballot papers to vote in the ballot to elect six of the Foundation’s 30 Governors.

This is a gentle reminder that all completed ballot papers must reach the Electoral Reform Services by noon on Thursday 30 September 2010.

Heritage Open Days 2009

Two former Spirella models met up for the first time after 53 years at the former corset and swimwear factory on Saturday in the world’s first Garden City.

The Spirella Building – under the ownership of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation – was the starting point for the town’s comprehensive involvement in the national Heritage Open Days, where 20 venues in the Garden City opened their doors to the public last weekend.

North Hertfordshire's Voluntary Sector Fair is back after two years, bringing to light many new and different voluntary opportunities. A total of 68 organisations will be exhibiting at this Heritage Foundation event, sponsored by North Herts CVS and North Hertfordshire College, on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October at two nearby venues – the Plinston and the Goldsmith Centre – both on Broadway, Letchworth Garden City.

Heritage Buildings open to the public

The Spirella BuildingMany of Letchworth Garden City's heritage buildings and places of worship will be open to the public on the weekend of 10 and 11 September 2005. Some of these buildings are not usually open to visitors and you 'll be treated to talks and guided walks. In addition to being able to admire the buildings, both outside and inside, there 'll be a number of opportunities to enjoy exhibitions, music, poetry, art and flower festivals.

This was the biggest ever display of fireworks seen in the world's first Garden City.
