Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation has recently submitted a planning application to North Hertfordshire District Council to make interim improvements to The Wynd, whilst continuing to work with the community on its long-term redevelopment plans.

Women In Letchworth Garden City exhibition at First Garden City Heritage Museum

The First Garden City Heritage Museum’s latest exhibition ‘Women in Letchworth Garden City’ opened last Saturday (2 April), which follows the lives of some of the town’s extraordinary women.

From factory workers to flappers, secretaries to suffragettes, the exhibition explores the town’s everyday domestic lives of wives, mothers and daughters from the early 1900s to present day. Look around old photographs, dresses and paintings by some of Letchworth’s finest female artists, to get a taste of their remarkable contribution to the town.

Over one hundred elm trees are to be grown in Letchworth GC as part of a nationwide project. The Conservation Foundation has launched ‘The Great British Elm Experiment’ attempting to reintroduce 10,000 elm trees across the UK and find out why some survived Dutch elm disease of the 1960’s, wiping out over 25 million of the trees in the UK.

Last Wednesday (2 March), independent sports retailer Trisports held an official opening to celebrate its relocation to larger premises within Letchworth Garden City.

Return of the King to Letchworth GC

The King’s first visit to Letchworth GC was in 1926, as the Duke of York.

His Royal Majesty King George VI, who visited Letchworth Garden City during the Second World War, arrives back in the town, this time gracing Broadway Cinema, in the Oscar-winning film, The King’s Speech.

Sunday’s Academy Awards in Los Angeles’ saw the British film pick up four prizes including ‘Best Picture’, with star Colin Firth named as ‘Best Actor’. The role which sees his majesty nervously battle a stutter up until 1939 is a stark contrast from his visit to Letchworth in 1941 where The Citizen Newspaper reports he looked “every inch a king”.

Banners were popular in the early Garden City, proudly displayed by organisations, at Letchworth’s many events, processions and grand occasions.

2010 is the perfect time for banners and flags to make a comeback. With a full programme of summer events planned, the winning designs will be reproduced on fabric and put on display.

Around 450 trees to be planted in new Orchard

Around 450 trees are to be planted to create a community Orchard and the first new commercial Orchard in Hertfordshire for decades. Since the 1950’s, more than 60 per cent of Orchards in England have vanished – largely down to housing or industrial developments taking over.

Saracens Sport Foundation - Tag Rugby Festival

On Friday March 14 2008, Letchworth Garden City Rugby Club hosted the Saracens Sport Foundations North Hertfordshire Tag Rugby Festival. On one of the warmest and sunniest days of the year to date, around 200 children enjoyed showcasing their tag rugby skills and having lots of fun at the same time.
