Over £6,700 was awarded to local causes through our grant funding this month. Here’s our round-up of the people we are supporting…

David Smith, a member of the British Bobsleigh Team and Letchworth resident, has been boosted by £1,000 towards his £5,000 2011/ 12 training programme. David hopes to compete for Team GB at the 2011 World Championships and the 2014 Winter Olympics.

19 Letchworth-based groups shared £3,188 towards Christmas lunches to be enjoyed by 802 people this December.

Heritage Museum displays work of mystery photographer

A collection of photographs by an unknown photographer, which have recently been rediscovered and restored, are to be showcased by First Garden City Heritage Museum in their new exhibition, ‘The Edwardian Photographer’.  

The photographs, named ‘The Brunt Album’, have never been displayed or published anywhere before. The collection, which spans 1904 – 1909, has been carefully restored following a grant from the Association of Independent Museums.

Advice bureau boosted by grant

The Letchworth branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau has recently been boosted by a £28,000 grant from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.

The grant will enable the Bureau to maintain its welfare benefit and money advice work for clients from its Leys Avenue premises for the next 12 months. In the last year alone, the Bureau secured benefit entitlements of over £150,000 and supported 1,000 people to help plan and reduce their debts.

Cinderella

Cinderella, by St Paul's Amateur Dramatics Society

Pop along to Plinston over the Christmas break and see the Garden City’s longest established Christmas Pantomime, presented by St Paul's Amateur Dramatics Society.

With nine performances between Monday 27 December and Saturday 1 January, this traditional tale about poor Cinderella and her quest to meet the Prince is guaranteed to spread some festive cheer!

Tickets cost just £9.50 or £8.50 concessions (tiered seating); £8.50 or £7.50 concessions (seating on flat).

Cottage Exhibitions Explained

A talk about ‘Garden City Cottage Exhibitions’ attracted over 120 guests to The Spirella Ballroom on Thursday, October 22.

Organised by Letchworth’s Exhibition Cottages Group and supported by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, the event was attended by cottage owners, academics, local architects, builders and interested town residents.

£35,000 grant

Howard Cottage - Home Support Worker with resident

Howard Cottage Housing Association has just received a £35,000 grant from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation to fund a Home Support worker for the elderly in the world’s first Garden City.

The scheme primarily helps people in the Garden City living in owner occupied  or privately rented properties to maintain independence in their homes, by providing safety checks, gardening, bathroom adaptations – a wide range of practical help and also advice on benefits, all forms of ‘paperwork’ etc.
