Upgrading The Wynd

Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation has recently submitted a planning application to North Hertfordshire District Council to make interim improvements to The Wynd, whilst continuing to work with the community on its long-term redevelopment plans.

John Lewis, the Foundation’s Chief Executive said: “These new plans allow us to improve The Wynd quickly and bring something fresh to the area. They are designed to maintain The Wynd for the next five years, this is likely to be the length of time it will take to establish long-term viable plans, which will complete the revitalisation of Letchworth town centre.”

The Foundation’s planning application, formulated in consultation with Wynd retailers, sees the core retail units retained and enhanced.  The works will include:

The entire area repainted and refurbished with additional planters.
Newly planted hedging for the extended car-park.

A new playground Pirate Ship will offer excitement for the kids. Located in the former market area of The Wynd, the play equipment will be aimed at children aged three to twelve. The wall around the area will be decorated with a mural prepared by a professional artist, working with pupils from Hillshott School.

In addition, a new Sensory Garden, between Leys Avenue and Openshaw Way, will provide the smells and textures of Lavender, Mint, Sage and Roses. Long grasses and wildlife will provide the sounds. The space, capable of accommodating small-scale live performances, comes with a pergola and seating.

Soft-play centre, Tumble Tent will stay in The Gallery with the remainder of the space converted to provide a covered market and auction house. Much-needed new public toilets will be located here.
