Generations of Garden City Girl Power

Women In Letchworth Garden City exhibition at First Garden City Heritage Museum

The First Garden City Heritage Museum’s latest exhibition ‘Women in Letchworth Garden City’ opened last Saturday (2 April), which follows the lives of some of the town’s extraordinary women.

From factory workers to flappers, secretaries to suffragettes, the exhibition explores the town’s everyday domestic lives of wives, mothers and daughters from the early 1900s to present day. Look around old photographs, dresses and paintings by some of Letchworth’s finest female artists, to get a taste of their remarkable contribution to the town.

Curator, Josh Tidy adds: “Our exhibition features the first pioneers who came to the new Garden City and strove to make the town a success, looking after its early residents – women like Annie Lawrence and Juliet Reckitt who made their mark on the town by founding two of its grandest buildings, The Cloisters and Howgills Friends Meeting House respectively.”

There is also an exciting series of events, as part of the exhibition programme, beginning in April:

Spring Flower Day
Saturday 16 April, 11am – 4pm
Join us for flower making activities, an Easter egg trail and decorating the museum for spring.

 Spring Afternoon Tea Party
Wednesday 20 April, 2pm – 5pm
Enjoy tea and cake by vintage caterer ‘Buns and Buntings’ with storytelling and craft activities for children.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 19 April to 2 July. The museum is located at 296 Norton Way South, just three minutes walk from Letchworth GC town centre.
