On Friday March 14 2008, Letchworth Garden City Rugby Club hosted the Saracens Sport Foundations North Hertfordshire Tag Rugby Festival. On one of the warmest and sunniest days of the year to date, around 200 children enjoyed showcasing their tag rugby skills and having lots of fun at the same time.
The event, sponsored by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, attracted entries from 24 primary schools across North Hertfordshire including eight from Letchworth Garden City. The day was organised and delivered by the Saracens Sport Foundation team who are the community arm of Guinness Premiership side Saracens.
Aimed at children in years five and six, every team had to include a minimum of two boys or two girls. There were two competitions, one for those schools familiar with tag rugby and one for those schools new to the sport. Each team was placed in a league appropriate to their skill levels, playing four matches. The winners of each competition’s mini leagues, then competed in the semi finals with the winners of these progressing to the final.
