Cinema very much ‘in the frame’
A £1m refurbishment of Broadway Cinema, a major exhibition tracing the history of cinema in the world’s first Garden City, two Open Weekends, movie quiz and the chance to win cash in a vote to find the ‘peoples’ film choice.’
Not only film buffs, but the public as a whole, will have plenty to savour in a feast of ‘everything cinema’ over the next few months, in Letchworth Garden City.
- The refurbishment is well underway and is expected to be completed in August at the town’s only cinema, which is owned by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. There will be a new 50-seater Screen Four, adding to the existing three screens, re-seating, flooring and carpeting to Screen One, re-roofing, exterior decoration, disabled access provided to Screen One, with the installation of a lift, plus other internal works
- From July 12, until October 4, ‘Cinema in Letchworth’ – an insight into the Garden City’s cinematic past – including memories from the former Palace Cinema – affectionately known locally as the ‘flea pit’ – will take place at the First Garden City Heritage Museum. There will be lots to do for all ages and a wide range of fascinating objects on display at this exhibition.
- Cinema buffs are invited to take part in a ‘Movie Quiz’ at the Plinston, Broadway, on Friday, August 1, starting at 7.30pm. Teams of up to six welcome. £3 per head – prizes, licensed bar. Call 01462 476057 for an entry form.

- Open Weekends: Visitors are invited to the Broadway Cinema for guided half- hour tours – a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of a working cinema from 10am-1pm – including the projection room – on Saturday and Sunday, September 13 and 14.
