Groundwork Hertfordshire

Grange Community Gardens

Grange Community Gardens

Groundwork Hertfordshire led a campaign towards creating a new community park in a key location within the Grange Estate.  The £365,000 scheme was backed by North Herts District Council, North Hertfordshire Homes, Big Lottery Fund and Letchworth Garden City Council.

The project included thorough consultation with all sections of the community to establish the need for a pleasant, safe, green space for the whole community, children’s play facilities and a ‘teen’ area.

The Settlement

The Settlement Extension

Community Hall and Theatre Extension

The Settlement was successful in obtaining a grant from the Waste Recycling Environment Ltd (WREN) for £45,000 towards the cost of extending the community hall and theatre.

The Settlement Players, who organise three productions a year, were keen for the extension to take place, as the original building has, in the past, prevented them from staging larger productions, involving more people.

Laura was awarded £400 towards a month long voluntary placement to Mombasa, Kenya in July 2007, organised by Travellers Worldwide. Laura’s placement involved volunteering at the Calvary Zion’s Children Home in the outskirts of mainland Mombasa.

Daily tasks included hand-washing clothes, preparing food for lunches and dinners, mopping floors and spending time with the abandoned / orphaned children.

Electronic Scoreboard

The Club, based at Whitethorn Lane, runs five senior male teams and a successful ladies team in Hertfordshire. Of the 325 members, 238 are youth players (male and female) ranging in age from under 7’s to under 18’s.

The Club is constantly looking at ways to develop its facilities and felt that the existing scoreboard, sited next to the Clubhouse, needed replacing, updating and moved to the opposite end of the ground.

Exhibition Cottages Group

Exhibition Cottages Group Plaque

The 1905 Exhibition Cottages Group – consisting of 116 owners of these dwellings – has used its grant to manufacture attractive enamel plaques based on a design created by one of its members, Ray Worbey.

“Putting these plaques up on the exterior of our members homes is our major enterprise for 2006,” stated Group Chairman, Alastair Lochhead. “We’re indebted to both the Council and the Foundation for the permissions and consents needed to do this.”
