Broadway Cinema

Broadway Cinema is one of the few remaining independent cinemas in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, operated by Broadway Cinema Ltd, registered company number 3100031. Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, through subsidiary Letchworth Garden City Services Ltd, owns 90% of the company, with the remaining share held by The Letchworth Palace Ltd.

This art deco cinema, designed by Bennett and Bidwell and built by Howard Hurst, originally opened its doors back in 1936. In recent years, the cinema has undergone an extensive £2m four-month refurbishment programme. The works included restoring and developing the cinema into a three-screen facility, to accommodate the increasing number blockbusters released week on week.

The cinema has remained popular throughout its existence. Most notably, it was a venue for occasional rallies, speeches and live music from the likes of Acker Bilk and Marti Wilde, and even The Beatles were booked to play (but cancelled) before they were famous! During more recent times, former Letchworth Garden City resident, and Director of Con Air and Tomb Raider, Simon West, was rumoured to have frequently visited the cinema in his youth.
