Want to help make a difference?

Want to help make a difference? ...then why not stand as a Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation Elected Governor?

The Heritage Foundation is currently seeking nominations for the six Elected Governor positions.

What do Governors do?

Governors have a substantial voice in shaping the future of the world's first Garden City. Among the first to be consulted on major new initiatives, they provide an invaluable conduit with the Letchworth Garden City community. They are volunteers and do not get paid. Governors attend five meetings a year, including the Garden City Meeting held in May. They serve on Heritage Foundation committees and represent the Heritage Foundation on external bodies and organisations.

How many Governors are there?

The Rules of the Heritage Foundation allow for a total of up to 30 Governors. There are three ways in which someone may become a Heritage Foundation Governor.

  • Elected
Six are elected, every five years, by a ballot of registered voters in the Garden City. This election, to be conducted by postal ballot in September 2005, will elect the six Elected Governors.
  • Nominated
Eight are nominated by Letchworth Garden City clubs and societies. In addition, two places are permanently reserved for the representatives of North Hertfordshire District Council and Hertfordshire County Council.
  • General
Fourteen are appointed by the Heritage Foundation's eight-strong Board of Management, six of whom the Governors elect by rotation at the AGM.

Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation owns and manages a £131m property estate in Letchworth Garden City, the world's first Garden City. As an Industrial & Provident Society with charity status, it generates income from the Estate - principally through the rental of office, retail and industrial space - in order to fund a wide range of charitable activities, such as a day hospital, a community hall, a museum, a mini bus service, community grants and loans. Yet the Foundation doesn 't cost Letchworth Garden City tax or rate payers a single penny. The Heritage Foundation is an apolitical organisation and does not promote political, religious or trade union views.

Interested?

If you wish to stand for election you must demonstrate a positive affinity to the Garden City and identify strongly with the Heritage Foundation and its objectives. You must be prepared to serve the whole of the Letchworth Garden City community to the best of your ability, and have a clear commitment to the town. You must be between the ages of 18 and 70, but do not need to live in Letchworth Garden City.
