Thousands flock to Broadway

Search for a Star winners with Stuart KennyOver 5,000 people visited 'summer on Broadway' , Letchworth Garden City's major summer fun day held in the town's Broadway Gardens on Saturday.

The highlight of the show was the final of the 'search for a Star' talent contest, which was won by Roxy Searle, 9, of Walkern and Melissa Baker, 16, of Steeple Morden.

Pupils and teachers from St Christopher School gave a special performance of The Beatles' 'sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' . There were brass and classical music selections from Letchworth Garden City Band and The Knights Templar School, respectively.

Rounding off proceedings, tribute band Kings of Queen played out with classic rock hits such as 'Bohemian Rhapsody' , 'We will rock you' and 'We are the champions'.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, North Herts District Council and Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, the Compere for the event, Alan Howard said "It was a great day out for the whole town and although the weather did us no favours it certainly didn't dampen spirits!"

The event was the first major public event held on the Gardens since the District Council reopened them in June 2003 after a £1.25m improvement scheme.
