Garden City TIC wins award

Pauline Peacock (left) and her team with Tess Wright (right)Tess Wright, Managing Director of The East of England Tourist Board, recently presented Letchworth Garden City Tourist Information Centre with a regional award for its work with visitors during this Golden Jubilee Year.

A key reason for winning the 'Best Dressed Window' Award, was the TIC's special window display for the Golden Jubilee weekend in June. It was created as part of 'Only in Britain. Only in 2002.' - the tourism industry's campaign to encourage overseas visitors to travel more widely and see more attractions in the UK this year.

Pauline Peacock, Letchworth Garden City's TIC Manager, commented: "We really wanted to create an atmosphere of celebration and let visitors know this is a special year, as soon as they come into the centre. We 're delighted to receive the Golden Jubilee Award and it's a fantastic souvenir of 2002."

Over 600 Tourist Information Centres around Britain were invited to enter for Awards and a commemorative Golden Jubilee plaque has been presented to just seven successful offices*.

'Only in Britain' campaign manager Jenny McGee commented: "We are aiming to encourage overseas visitors to travel more widely during their stay and discover some 'hidden gems' . Letchworth Garden City TIC is doing a great job welcoming our visitors and helping them discover the attractions of the area and we wanted to recognise their work."

As part of the campaign, the English Tourism Council has produced a number of materials, on behalf of the regional and national tourist boards. These are being given away to overseas visitors by a range of tourism suppliers, from TICs to hotels, ferries, airports and car hire companies. They include a Welcome to Britain pack, with an events newsletter, a guide to 'Hidden Britain' and a map of all TICs; bookmarks; and free post cards to send home. There are also posters and videos being displayed or shown in train stations, airports, ferries etc
