Tree Planting on the Greenway
On Thursday 20 November 2003, pupils from 17 Letchworth Garden City schools gathered for tree planting on the Greenway near Radwell Meadows. Armed with spades and forks, the children planted 100 trees along a section of the Greenway route to commemorate 100 years of the world's first Garden City. After planting, they decorated the trees with brightly-coloured ribbons and labels.
Tree planting was a regular social feature of early Garden City life. From the 1900s onwards, Letchworth's roads were planted with individual species of tree and 'Arbor Days' were created to celebrate the bloom of a particular variety. In 1937, hundreds of school children gathered on Norton Common to plant trees in celebration of the coronation of King George VI.
Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation will present each participating school with a framed commemorative certificate and photograph; in addition, each pupil who took part in today's ceremony will receive their own certificate.
