Town Centre 'Revved Up' For Centenary Fun

Taro The JesterGet ready for a weekend packed full of fun, entertainment and activities in Letchworth Garden City town centre - and it's free! Letchworth Garden City is the place to be this weekend when the town centre comes alive as part of the town's Centenary celebrations.

Celebrations
Starting at 10am this Saturday, Summer Fun Day, organised by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, will hit the high notes in what will be the largest event ever staged in the heart of the town centre. Mid-morning 'Make A BIG Noise' will be filling the town centre with music, as 457 infant and junior school pupils play and sing alongside local musicians. The BIG Noise will climax at 12 noon with 100 blasts of sound, and spectators are invited to join in. The fanfare will be followed by the launch of 1,000 balloons. In The Gallery, between 1pm and 2.30pm Charlie Thomson of Allstar Accapella is offering a free one-hour workshop where you can learn two songs in full harmony, which will then be taken around the town centre.

Entertainments
The Royal Naval Association will be showcasing a special exhibition about HMS Spey, a ship adopted by Letchworth during World War Two. The Association's team will include three of the vessel's former shipmates. Over 50 local clubs and societies will be taking part with stalls, exhibitions and displays, these include:

  • Letchworth Winemakers
  • Wilbury Hall Amateur Theatricals (WHAT)
  • Baldock & District Canoe Club

The Gang Show Scouts will be performing a show near the Hogshead at 10.30am and street entertainers will be on hand to provide amusement throughout the town centre. There 'll also be children's activities, including face painting and competitions. In addition, there 'll be other designated areas in the town centre where music will be performed live. From rock to pop, jazz to folk, there 'll be something to suit everyone's tastes.

Classic Sunday
On Sunday, from 11am, Classic Sunday' brings all things classic to Letchworth Garden City town centre.Veteran and classic cars, motorcycles and cycles will be on display, along with live jazz, classical and popular music, stalls and Scottish country dancing. There 'll also be competitions, children's activities and street entertainment from The Fun Squad, Chester Mazing and What A Palaver. Professor Crump will be making a welcome return to the Garden City after recent appearances at the opening of the Garden City Greenway and celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation. More than 30 town centre shops will be 'open for business' as well, and there 'll be plenty of places to eat and drink, so come along, join in the fun and help to celebrate 100 years of the world's first Garden City.
