Achievements

  • Street Scene Improvements on EastcheapSince 1995, the Heritage Foundation has channelled £27.3m from its own resources back into the Letchworth Garden City through its charitable commitments. This equates to £5,351 per day for each of 5,110 days the Foundation has served the community.

  • A £500,000 investment by the Foundation enabled a high quality refurbishment of Letchworth’s favourite covered shopping area. The resplendent Arcade, is home to Abacus Travel, Annie’s Chocolate Emporium, Hairflair and many other popular speciality shops.

  • In May 2009, the Foundation embarked on an £8m Street Scene investment to transform Letchworth Town Centre’s two major streets – Eastcheap and Leys Avenue. Now complete, the project has delivered an improved, family friendly shopping environment featuring designer lighting and street furniture, improved parking, water features and public art.

  • In 2007 the Centenaries of the 1905 and 1907 Exhibition Cottages were celebrated in a groundbreaking international competition, challenging architects to bring forward designs for new eco-friendly, affordable housing schemes to be delivered in the Garden City.

  • The Foundation’s gift to the Garden City community in its Centenary year, 2003, was the opening of a 13.6 mile circular Garden City Greenway for walking and in part cycling and horse riding. As the whole town celebrated in style, thanks to the massive involvement of voluntary clubs and societies working in partnership with the Heritage Foundation in such events as “The Big Noise”, “Sportathon” and “Classic Sunday”.

  • Refurbishment of the former ICL building on Broadway to create the 35,600 sq-ft Nexus office building through a £5 million regeneration, in 2001.

  • 1996-1999 the Heritage Foundation spearheaded the £60 million revitalisation of Letchworth Garden City town centre. The single screen, Art-Deco Broadway Cinema was transformed into a luxury 3-screen facility after a £2 million refurbishment.

  • In 1998 the Heritage Foundation completed an £11 million refurbishment of the semi-derelict corset factory, The Spirella Building to create a modern, award winning 82,000sq-ft office complex. The following year North Hertfordshire College unveiled its new £2 million Goldsmith Centre on Broadway and a new 70,000sq-ft Morrison food store returned supermarket shopping to the heart of the Garden City.
